PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
MKAC AND YOU - CHANGING LIVES FOR THE BETTER

First let me express my heartfelt thanks to you, our donors, supporters and well wishers for the tremendous support you have given us by way of contributions and donations in kind. We deeply appreciate each and every one of you. It is you who have made it possible for MKAC to carry out our work to assist more than 270 kidney patients and the chronically ill. This newsletter is intended to provide brief reports on our programmes and activities and keep you updated as to how your charity dollar is being utilized. I hope you enjoy reading the articles.

We have made steady progress since our establishment as a registered society on 27 April 2004. We moved from a small office space in Kim Seng Road to much bigger premises in 122 Telok Kurau Road on 1 Jan 2006. This place has become like a second home for the 270 kidney patients we are serving.

Between Sept 2006 and Aug 2007, we conducted more than 300 home visits including follow-up visits. In 2007 a total of 300 patients were visited in their homes by MKAC volunteers. The patients were very appreciative of the visits. They were touched by the concern shown. As a result of these visits MKAC was able to properly identify the urgent needs of the kidney patients and draw up proper plans to attend to their needs.

Today, we have an Enrichment Centre for the school going children of kidney patients, a shelter for the homeless and we will soon introduce a transport scheme to ensure that kidney patients transport problems to dialysis centres are minimized. I am also pleased to announce that MKAC will be introducing a Micro Finance Scheme to help kidney patients set up and run their own small businesses. We feel that this is the best way to achieve our goal of making them independent and self-sufficient.

At the MKAC Charity Dinner, the MKAC "Heart of Courage" Award was presented to Mdm Sartinah Bte Abdul Rahim. Mdm Sartinah tragically lost her 15 year old daug, hter Syahida Bte Said who was a victim of a road accident in December 2006. Despite her grief, she had the presence of mind to give consent to donate her daughter's heart, liver and 2 kidneys to save the lives of 4 persons. We salute Mdm Sartinah for her selflessness and for promoting awareness on organ donation in Singapore.

MKAC has prepared its Workplan and Programmes for 2008. We are looking forward to further progress in our work and activities for the improvement of the lives of the people we serve. Thank you once again for your kindness. I wish you all a truly happy and blessed New Year 2008.
